Then state senator Barack Obama took over the national stage with one amazing speech at the 2004 democratic national convention. In that speech he delivered a message that Americans had been waiting for. He spoke about bringing Americans together. He even said that he is his brothers keeper and his sister keeper.
With this positive unifying message the Obama Phenomenon began. Four years later he was elected to the U.S. Senate and then beat Republican John McCain in the 2008 presidential election with 52.9% of the popular vote and 28 states he was elected the 44th U.S. President.
People had amazing hope for his presidency as it was a part of the campaign marketing. People said he represented what Martin Luther King stood for and he would continue the legacy of John F. Kennedy. People connected with Obama like no candidate ever before him. With an all time record $778,642,962 in campaign contributions he was a rock star.
His predecessor, the 43rd U.S. President George W. Bush led the country to a very sorry place. By the time he left office the United States was involved in two undeclared wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and was so broke it still has to borrow money to operate even though there was a surplus when he started. He said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction but by the end of his presidency he was telling jokes about where they were.
Americans started feeling the pinch of the down economy in late 2007, by 2008 it was clear there was a problem. People could not get loans for their businesses and homes but banks were given billions of dollars in George Bush’s Tarp program which Obama and McCain supported just before the fall 2008 election.
Obama was sworn in only a few months later on Jan 20th 2009. So, how are things going? Are WE better off or only a select few?
Lets start with the money. Check out what is being reported by the government. I used the official documents from whitehouse.gov to focus on what has been happening since 1980. The United States government has spent more money than it has collected every single year except 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001. Only four of the last thirty-two years have been positive. This means the government has extra money to save or invest only 12.5% of the time. That’s 1 good year for every 8 bad years. [ US Budget Variance since 1980 ]
Obama’s critics say he serves wall street first. Well lets take a look at how wall street has been doing since Jan 20 2009.
This Google finance chart shows the stock market has gained well over 35%.
I don’t know where you live but Main street does not have 35% more since 2009. It seems like people have less than 35% left.
Ok what about the Wars?
Obama said that he would end the war in Iraq and get the troops out. Since then we have seen more war activities with the Libya war, the attack on Pakistan, and the drone that was caught and taken by Iran. Also, he never did close the secret prisons and said that he was against the Patriot act but then signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act or NDAA which explicitly exposes anyone in the world American or otherwise to Indefinite detention without trial. It means if you are charged even if by mistake you are gone bye bye, done. Wow.
Ok what about our society and communities?
Well you have Forbes and other national newspapers reporting on what has been called “fast and furious”. Which is simply the amazing scandal of drugs, guns, gangs and governments. Ronald Reagan had Oliver North and Iran–Contra so Obama has Eric Holder and Fast and Furious. This stuff is too weird to make up. The sad thing is it appears to be the status quo for these guys below:
So what do you think? Comment below if you think Obama is more like:
A) Community organizer and activist Martin Luther King
B) President John Fitzgerald Kennedy
C) President George Walker Bush
